Laughter – just for the fun of it?

I think that we laugh a lot less than we used to when we were children. In fact, I have noticed that our children are laughing less often than we used to when we were children. Remembering that our children mimic us, are we letting the stress of our lives make us more serious, which the children are then mimicking?

There are so many benefits to laughter and as we let our anxiety about making the the monthly mortgage overwhelm us, we lose out on all these benefits.

Let’s look at what some of the benefits are:

Reduces stress hormones – you cannot be stressed when you are laughing.

Boosts the immune system – helps to keep illness at bay.

Believe it or not, laughter is excercise! And a workout for muscles we would not normally use at the gym such as the diaphragm.

Laughter causes us to take longer and deeper breaths so the level of oxygen in the blood is increased – yippee! This ensures that plenty of oxygen gets to the brain helping us think more clearly.

Don’t you find that you have a general sense of well-being after a good laugh? A feeling that last a while? This is because laughter makes the body release those wonderful endorphins which trundle around the body for a good 30 to 40 minutes, giving us that wonderful feeling.

Now that we have looked at some of the health benefits of laughter, think about how this will benefit your children. A happier, healthier you means that (with our children imitating us) our children will also be happier and healthier.
